I think students should be allowed to bring mobile phones to school.  Some schools do not allow that because they think the students will play with their phones during class. But I think there are only a small  number of students who do so.  
There are many reasons students want to bring their phones to school. Some live far away and may need to call their parents to pick them up from school. Some want to report to their parents and let them know they've arrived home safely.  
In schools that don't allow mobile phones, the students who bring them will be punished and will get a nasty remark in their handbook. I don't think it's fair.  
Schools should let students bring their phones, and students who play games or message on their phones during school hours should stop doing so.

 Thank you for your letter, Winnie. There is no doubt that mobile phones are useful technology - in certain circumstances. But currently youngsters use them obsessively, even waking up during the night to read their messages and text friends. 
For hundreds of years, children all over the world have managed to attend school without mobile phones. There is no reason why it should be a necessary piece of equipment today, especially in Hong Kong which is such a safe city. If  a student wants to contact  their parents to let them know they have arrived home safely, they can use their phone from home.
Phones can be put on silent mode, and it adds to teachers' burden to have to constantly be checking whether or not someone is playing a game or sending a text message. It's far better for students to unplug from their phones and plug in to their lessons.
