CHINA should disclose more about how the People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers to be based in the territory in 1997 will be deployed, Hong Kong affairs advisers say.
The call followed a two-day visit by about 200 China-appointed representatives to the Guangzhou PLA base. The advisers said the visit was ''inadequate'' in its intention to reassure them of the PLA's discipline.
The visit was restricted to local delegates to the National People's Congress, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the Preliminary Working Committee (PWC) and the three batches of advisers.
Yesterday's itinerary included a two-hour tour of the military training centre in the Shuang Yuan military zone in Guangzhou.
The soldiers trained at the station carried out mock attacks as the Hong Kong visitors watched.
Chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, Tsang Yok-sing, said: ''It is too early to comment on the quality of the PLA based merely on what we were shown today.'' PWC member Professor Lau Siu-kai said the visit alone would not remove Hong Kong people's fear of PLA soldiers.
