A SERIES of carefully orchestrated events has been planned to usher in the 150th anniversary - each of them appropriately symbolic, regal and distinguished.

Months of detailed work have preceded this week's demonstration of precision and pride.

Nothing has been left to chance and, despite the odd nervous moment, police chiefs are confident the public will be able to witness a rare display of pomp and regalia.

Today, at 11 a.m., a guard at Government House will dismount after being posted on Saturday evening, this ceremonial act being timed to mark the start of the anniversary year.

The Governor, Chris Patten, is scheduled to inspect the troops and receive a royal salute.

At the moment the guard dismounts, a guard of honour will assemble at Edinburgh Place for another phase in the celebrations.
