IT seems fitting that plans should be unveiled for a new marine police facility in this anniversary year.
For, in many ways, Hong Kong has been built up around its nautical heritage.
Last month, a $78.6 million construction proposal was revealed to convert a pier at Sai Wan Ho into a three-storey multi-purpose headquarters and training centre.
Curiously, it is considered the first time that the marine police have had a training unit on the water.
The Marine Police is considered by many people to be the most famous of all teams in the Royal Hong Kong Police.
With more than 150 vessels and an establishment strength of about 3,000 officers, it is ranked among the 10th largest marine fighting forces in the world.
It is responsible for policing the 1,850 square kilometres of territorial waters; a hefty task getting more difficult each day.
