Olympic Stables churn out winners as trainers cash in on improved facilities
David Ferraris was buoyant after claiming the Kwai Shing Handicap with Winning Edge and announced that 'the winds of change are blowing for the Olympic Stables'.
While perhaps not as an important statement as that issued by British prime minister Harold MacMillan in Cape Town 50 years ago, the fact that the trainers are now thriving in the new complex is starting to show on the dividend boards. The much maligned Olympic Stables struggled to match the performances of their counterparts last season with Ferraris, Sean Woods, Michael Chang Chun-wai and Andreas Schutz all battling through lean times.
'Really, it's a different atmosphere down there now and everyone is reaping the benefits of some positive changes to the facilities by the Jockey Club and some better morale,' Ferraris said. 'Sean and Andreas have started the season well, Michael trained his first winner this afternoon and personally I couldn't be happier with my string at the moment.
'Winning Edge was overdue for a win, the good pace enabled him to settle better and he really rattled home.'
Ridden by Weichong Marwing, Winning Edge settled at the rear before swamping his opposition in the straight to score by a neck over My Mate Adric, with a further length back to Longwah Rising in third.
'He's won well, and it will look like a good win because he came from so far back and made a lot of ground,' Marwing said. 'That was only a Class Three, but once he settles he is going to improve a little bit more and he has another win in the tank for sure.'
