Jun Kung
Describing himself as neither underground nor overground, artist and producer Jun Kung straddles the enviable position of enjoying mass local appeal while retaining creative control and his independent spirit. Initially building his reputation as the finest drummer in town, the multi-instrumentalist shot to fame playing and producing tracks for Canto-pop royalty Jacky Cheung Hok-yau. Now signed to actor Daniel Wu Yin-cho's management company, his third solo album was released last month, and his recent sold-out performance at Hitec confirms his standing amid the top of the local music echelon.
DP
Two-piece bass and drum behemoths DP have been throwing out unrelenting rock and roar to admiring audiences since 2007. Having toured Britain and played headlining festival slots in Australia and Vietnam, the duo were invited to perform in Austin, Texas, at the prestigious SXSW showcase event this year. Their limited-edition 7-inch vinyl single My Hyena was released in the summer and the follow-up video for Velvet Tiger was directed by Quan Yeomans (of Regurgitator fame). DP will be playing the Hong Kong Rocks for Education benefit show at Grappa's Cellar tonight.
Snoblind
Hong Kong's electronica scene is developing apace and one of the acts at its forefront are laptop wonderkins Snoblind. The duo of Regina Chang and Vincent Wong furrow a warped style of melodic, electronic soundscaping. Coupled with hypnotic visual arrangements, their full live set is pure sensory joy. With gigs on the mainland planned for November, local fans can keep in touch with the band through the Thought Blog - an online destination they call their 'musical sketchbook'.
