Like many people in Hong Kong, Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen is not happy about having to work long hours. So now he is trying to do something about it.
He set the ball rolling yesterday by ordering the secretary for labour and welfare to study standard working hours following the minimum-wage legislation.
'We must handle this complex and controversial issue with care to strike a balance between the interests of various sectors,' he said in his address. Later, he told the media: 'My working hours are very long. I find that I do not have much time left after almost every working day.
'If I can't stand the long work hours, I believe there must be a problem for others as well.'
Tsang added that he understood the issue would draw many arguments but he believed Hong Kong people were mature enough to discuss it. 'The game has started and it will play on,' he said.
