A cabbie who said he fell asleep at the wheel was arrested for dangerous driving after his taxi crashed at a work site in Kwun Tong, killing one worker and injuring two others.

The 43-year-old man, who had been driving for about 12 hours before the crash at about 5am yesterday, was released on HK$10,000 bail and must report back to police today.

The accident occurred in Tseung Kwan O Road near Lam Tin fire station shortly after the taxi left the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel, police said.

Part of a lane had been closed while a Drainage Services Department contractor inspected an underground sewer, and three trucks were parked at the site.

Cheng Wing-ka, 39, and two colleagues, 31 and 32, had finished their inspection and were preparing to leave when the accident happened. The taxi first ran into the left side of a truck displaying a flashing arrow, then continued on and hit the three men, police said. It rolled on for about 30 metres and came to a stop after mounting a footpath, with both tyres on the right side burst.
