Transport subsidy for working poor will cost HK$1b a year
A transport subsidy programme announced in the policy address to help the working poor will cost the government about HK$1 billion a year, the secretary for labour and welfare said yesterday. Matthew Cheung Kin-chung said his bureau was still studying details of the Work Incentive Transport Subsidy Scheme, including who would be eligible for the monthly allowance of HK$600. The scheme would replace a similar programme covering low-income earners in Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, Islands and North districts.
RTHK to help broadcasters
RTHK will help organisations make use of digital audio and terrestrial TV broadcasting channels as a public service broadcaster without interfering with content. Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan, secretary for commerce and economic development, told lawmakers the government conducted extensive consultation on the future operation of RTHK and would try to help it become a platform for digital broadcasting.
