Road skills sadly lacking

WHY is it in Hong Kong, so called professional drivers, that is, bus drivers, taxi drivers, heavy goods vehicle drivers, etc, are the worst? Being a driver with quite considerable experience on both two and four-wheeled vehicles even a simple cab ride can be a hair-raising experience.

Every day driving in Hong Kong can leave you shaking and thinking of alternatives.

I drive to Kwai Chung at least twice a week. I choose to go along the Lung Cheung Road as it's usually congested so traffic is moving at a snail's pace.

If you can avoid the light goods vehicles cutting in you're okay, but look out for the Civics and Preludes with ''go faster stickers'' on them. They can be tricky at times. And then to Container Terminal Road.

A biker's nightmare! Here you have to avoid the 18-wheelers in the wrong lane. You tackle a large roundabout to take the second exit and you have a lorry on the outside heading back where he came cutting across your path due to lane mismanagement or unawareness of the workings of a roundabout. Is this not part of the HK driving school training? Maybe erecting simple signs before a roundabout to give directions on how to use this simple congestion relieving device would help. It would be interesting to see what the Transport Department would like to say.

Also, why do buses and taxis stop in the middle of the road? Just a slight movement of the hand and a little premeditation wouldn't go amiss. Everywhere you go it's the same, usually with no indication of their intentions.
