Of Moths and Stars Polyphonic Rust (Bone Idol Enterprises) Recorded at London's Resident Studios with producer Adam Lunn (The Magic Numbers, Jamie T), Polyphonic Rust is the debut EP release from Hong Kong-based duo Christopher Dabbs (vocals, guitar) and Nathan Wisniewski (vocals, percussion) better known as Of Moths and Stars (OMAS). Swirling backing vocals sweep to a high on opening track Closer, which showcases how far OMAS have come as songwriters. Throughout the EP, a session cellist and flautist adroitly contribute subtle textures and colours. However, the studio treatment is not as complimentary on the second track Never Get Older, where backward loops and frenetic flute lines obscure what is, at its core, a very charming song. The title track provides more immediacy, with a tub-thumping bass drum and a crashing chorus. The sea shanty-like folk paean of Blue Moon draws the EP to a singalong close. In the best of senses, OMAS use their influences to navigate their way, although they clearly steer their own course towards interesting destinations. There's enough evidence here to suggest these hopefuls will sound more like certainties with every passing nautical mile.
