The trial of a district police chief's son accused of knocking down and killing a Hebei University student while drink-driving will be held in a separate jurisdiction to ensure fairness, Xinhua reported yesterday, citing a local judicial official. This is designed to avoid the influence of the father, who is a deputy director of a district police bureau in Baoding, where the accident happened, Xinhua cited a Baoding judicial official as saying. Li Qiming, the 22-year-old son of Li Gang, was arrested by Wangdu county prosecutors on Sunday night after being detained for allegedly running over two women students while driving at 100km/h through the campus late at night on October 16. One of the women, Chen Xiaofeng , died. Li showed no remorse when stopped. 'My father is Li Gang,' was his only reply, apparently thinking his father's status would protect him from prosecution. Commenting on moving the trial, Chen's elder brother, Chen Lin, said: 'I don't think it will make much difference as Wangdu is still within the power of Baoding city.'
