The vibe: perched high up in The Peninsula, Felix is one of Hong Kong's landmark bars. It boasts floor-to-ceiling windows facing Hong Kong Island on one side and Kowloon on the other.

Philippe Starck was commissioned to create the bar's interior and, given the venue's guaranteed customer base, could have opted for a rather bland imagery. But, instead, Stark ran at the oceanic theme.

The small bar above the main restaurant area is shaped like a conch shell, forcing drinkers to sit extremely close to one another and the 360-degree bar. The marine theme also spills over onto side plates made of blue rippled glass.

Despite the daring design choices for a bar that charges so much for food and drinks, Felix has little reason to fear people turning their noses up: it's the view keeps guests coming.

The drinks: Felix offers a modest range of cocktails rather than a mega-list of over-the-top concoctions, and the Pearadise (HK$115) is a decent choice for the cold weather. The mix of Bombay Sapphire gin, apricot brandy, pear puree and Cointreau is a surprisingly comforting drink. For a wake up, a simple gin and tonic (again Bombay Sapphire, HK$95) has never been better.
