The youngest son of lawmaker Timothy Fok Tsun-ting  was yesterday ordered to perform 160 hours of community service after crashing his BMW while he was three times over the drink-driving limit.
In Eastern Court, Jeremy Fok Kai-yan,  21, was also disqualified from driving for a year. He earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and drink-driving in July. 
Timothy Fok said outside a Legislative Council meeting that it was a good lesson for his son. '[I] hope young people get the message, 'Do not drink and drive',' he said. 
Jeremy Fok's counsel, Lawrence Lok  SC,  told the court that a probation officer described the defendant as remorseful. 
Fok's psychiatrist also expressed significant improvement in the defendant after treatment for depression, Lok said. 
The probation officer's thorough report, including interviews with Fok's primary schoolteacher and boarding school headmaster in Britain, reflected what was put forward in mitigation two weeks ago, Lok said. 
The court heard earlier that Fok was not a spoiled son and had done charity work in Sri Lanka.
Acting Principal Magistrate Amanda Woodcock  said that the offences were serious. 'Hong Kong is small enough. There's no excuse for not jumping into a taxi to get from A to B.'
Lok proposed that the court impose a community service order of 240 hours, but Woodcock decided on 160 hours in light of Fok's remorse, background and family support. 
On July 17, Fok lost control of the BMW, with the registration 'HK21', while driving along Bonham Road. He crossed over double white lines and crashed into roadside railings. 
A breath test at the scene had a reading of 95 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. A later test at Happy Valley police station returned a reading of 71mcg/100ml. The limit is 22mcg/100ml. 
Outside the court, Fok and his mother, former Miss Hong Kong Loletta Chu Ling-ling,  were surrounded by journalists as they made their way to her car, with the registration 'HK77' - the year she won the beauty pageant. 
'It's good now that [the case] is over,' Chu said.
