Lam Tai Fai College believe they can win five out of six titles at the upcoming 2010/11 All-New Territories Inter-school Fencing Competition. With six Hong Kong squad members in their team, Lam Tai Fai's fencers are very confident as they prepare for the November 27-28 contest. But they are not taking any team lightly and will be ready to battle it out for top honours.
Nicholas Edward Choi, who represented Hong Kong at this year's Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, has left the school and he will be missed. 'Nicholas was a key foil fencer of the school team and his departure is a big loss,' said Kent Sham Kin-fai. Last year, Kent and Nicholas helped the school claim the foil team title, while Kent beat Nicholas in the individual foil final.
'Our foil fencers still have an advantage over fencers from other schools. We should have no problem taking the title again,' said Kent.
Nicholas' twin sister, Natasha Erica Choi, will be leading the girls' epee team. Participating in the 2010 Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships was a great experience, Natasha said.
Natasha, who won a silver medal in the junior girls' epee team event, said she now knows how to control her emotions during a match.
'Sometimes I am too aggressive and may commit unforced errors. I've learned to pause and think about my next move and this can help me prevent making silly mistakes,' she said.
Tiffany Yuen Ki-yan is the leader of the girls' sabre team. She said she needs to handle the pressure better this year. 'Last year I lost to a senior member of the Hong Kong team in both team and individual competitions and ended up with one silver and one bronze. I think I have to cope with the pressure in order to achieve more,' said Tiffany.
