Two years on, family and friends still hope to find missing Canadian

Last week marked the second anniversary of the disappearance of Canadian tourist Ani Ashekian. Her family last heard from her on November 11, 2008, while she was in Hong Kong.

Two years ago a CCTV camera in Causeway Bay MTR station recorded the last known images of the 32-year-old, withdrawing money twice from an ATM.

Police, local volunteers, private investigators, and even psychics have all tried to help. Officers have canvassed neighbourhoods and posted appeals on television and in police publications, but it has all been to no avail.

What is known is that the Canadian (pictured) arrived at Hong Kong International Airport on November 9, 2008, and was spotted at Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui a day later. Records do not show Ashekian left the city. There has been no cellphone or bank-account activity since her disappearance.

Ashekian's family and friends have still not given up hope, however.

'I check in regularly with the senior police inspector involved with the case. While there have been no leads for some time, we still receive regular e-mails from people who hear about Ani and send their suggestions and thoughts,' a volunteer known only as Kinzie said.

'A group of local volunteers continues to stay in touch via Facebook. [There are now more than 15,000 members of the Missing: Ani Ashekian group]. We encourage anyone who may know something to e-mail [email protected].'
Updates are posted on a website, www.findani.com. People can also contact the Hong Kong Island regional crime unit on its Ani Ashekian hotline at 2860 7834.
