Raising money for charity is a family affair in Discovery Bay. Last Saturday morning hundreds of mums, dads and children set out from the Discovery Mind Kindergarten for a four-kilometre charity walk to Siena Park.

It was the sixth year the walk has been held and is one of many school events being run during the festive season to raise money for the annual fund-raising appeal organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK called Operation Santa Claus.

Discovery Mind Kindergarten runs a school and play centre in Discovery Bay and a school and playgroup in Tung Chung.

In the weeks before the event, the children asked for sponsors to support their participation in the walk and this year they were on target to hit HK$100,000, with the final amount to be confirmed next week.

About 500 people joined the walk, including five-year-old Kaia with her parents, Doug Tahirali and M.C. Merkly, who were dressed as Mr and Mrs Santa Claus.

'The kids like to get dressed up so we try to do it as well,' Doug said.
