Observatory director Dr Lee Boon-ying apologised for mistakenly describing Friday's minor earthquake in Hong Kong as an 'intense earthquake' in a press release. A 2.8-magnitude quake, with its epicentre in Deep Bay, Shenzhen, was felt at 2.42pm. A press release at 3.16pm said it was an 'intense earthquake', but this was corrected to 'minor' in releases at 3.59pm and 5.52pm. Lee said the error happened because staff were 'in a hurry'. Meanwhile, the observatory will review staff management after the Audit Commission said it was improper to charge extra money when scientific officers were invited to do forecasts on television.
