Beijing yesterday defended the controversial jailing of milk scandal hero Zhao Lianhai that has caused outrage around the world.
A day before the deadline for Zhao to appeal, the statement issued by Xinhua's Hong Kong branch also made clear it was addressing the concerns raised in the city specifically.
Zhao, whose son was sickened by melamine-tainted milk, was jailed for two and a half years on November 10 for 'provoking quarrels and making trouble' after he gave up his job to become an activist to help similar victims' families seek justice.
The sentence sparked a public outcry in Hong Kong where 28 local deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) issued a joint petition calling for Zhao's release last week, while the city's lawmakers from across the political spectrum also backed Zhao.
Citing information provided by Daxing District People's Court, Xinhua defended the court ruling on the grounds that Zhao continued his activism after his son recovered.
The five-year-old boy was given free hospital treatment and recovered in October 2008, a month after he was diagnosed with kidney stones.
