Security software provider McAfee is hailing the top results garnered by its new security platform in tests, saying it raises the bar in intrusion-prevention solutions. The Network Security Platform M-8000 appliance scored highest in accuracy and throughput in recent comparative tests by NSS Labs, with tuning requirements for users found to have been dramatically reduced. Default security effectiveness scored an unprecedented 92 per cent, says a spokesman for McAfee. Unlike with other Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) solutions, these results indicate that organisations can now achieve extremely high protection levels with little or no 'tuning' effort. The company says that with industry average effectiveness below 50 per cent, this could be a game-changer for organisations that are unable to invest countless hours fine-tuning their IPS policies to achieve effective network security. 'McAfee has been a consistent performer in our tests, and this year they raised the bar,' says Rick Moy, president of NSS Labs. 'Our test report and analysis, which are based upon real-world use cases and include over 1,100 live exploits, are a requirement for many organisations when deciding which products to purchase. Tuning is an important part of IPS management, and highly effective out-of-the-box policies help organisations achieve better protection with less effort.' McAfee introduced its groundbreaking, vulnerability-based network IPS in 2003. The company's engineers around the globe are dedicated to the development of the McAfee Network Security Platform. Additionally, a team of 500 plus McAfee Labs researchers provide real-time vulnerability research to power the platform.
