In Japan, one dog stands out from the rest. She's an eight-year-old Labrador Retriever who has taken the police dog exam six times. With each failed attempt, Kinako and her trainer became more determined. They eventually won the public's support.

The real-life story of Kinako is brought to the big screen with the release of Police Dog Dream. Directed by Yoshinori Kobayashi, the film tells the touching story of Kinako and her apprentice police dog trainer Kyoko (played by Kaho).

As a child, Kyoko watched her father, Ryoichi Mochizuki (Kenichi Endo), complete a daunting rescue mission with police dog Elf. The mission seemed destined to fail, but was miraculously accomplished. Since that day, Kyoko has wanted to follow in her father's footsteps and become a dog trainer.

After her father passed away, she enrols in the Bamba Police Dog Training School, where she meets Kinako, a Labrador Retriever puppy.

Kyoko and Kinako are inseparable from the start - they develop a strong bond. Although Kinako is pure-bred, she does not have the physical build of a police dog: she is undersized, and her future as a police dog is in doubt.
