Likewise, Fresh, a United States-based beauty brand, has bath products that contain Japanese sake, while its Rose face mask contains melted rose petals and must be refrigerated.

The modern beauty industry is moving from hi-tech, lab-created skin care ingredients to natural products. Everyday ingredients, such as yogurt, honey and cucumber, are being paired with exotic Amazon rainforest offerings such as acerola, buriti oil, and murumuru butter. The resulting products must be refrigerated and used quickly.

'It's happening like crazy,' says Karen Young, CEO of the Young Group, a consulting company that works with beauty brands, of the increased prevalence of food products in skin care. 'We're learning more about skin and nature, and [their interaction].'

Elique Organic Skin Food, created by California-based aesthetician Elisha Reverby, uses products made from lavender, eucalyptus and rosemary from Santa Monica canyon, and honey and eggs from the local farmers' market. The products have such a cult following that Reverby ships them worldwide.

Farmhouse Fresh, a brand out of Frisco, Texas, offers a body cream made from live strawberry cells, a toning treatment that contains sweet sage, milk and oats, and a scrub filled with Kentucky bourbon.

Shannon McLinden, CEO of Farmhouse Fresh, says of the scrub: 'It has a clean, soapy finish. Alcohol has the ability to flash off and dissipate in the air.'
