Grooming for Christmas

Reading Time:2 minutes
Why you can trust SCMP

With Christmas just around the corner and party invites flooding in, everyone wants to look their best. Looking good starts with proper grooming.

Choosing the perfect outfit can be a challenge: the first step is dressing appropriately. Think about the other guests: if it's a Christmas gathering with aunts, uncles and other extended family members, do think about dressing modestly. This is not the time to dress scantily, or wear board shorts and flip flops! Casual dress is acceptable if you're going to an outdoor party with friends.

Top turn-offs: Girls

1 Too much make-up: Foundation can cover a multitude of sins but there is no need to layer it an inch thick: less really is more for teenage skin. A tinted moisturiser with sunscreen will give you coverage and even out imperfections. Big, bold red lips can make you look vampish, so try lip gloss or tinted lip balm to highlight and moisturise your lips.

2 Black eyeliner: Black is simply too harsh for fresh-faced teens. Try going a couple of shades lighter, and experiment with dark brown, charcoal or even navy.

3 Panda eyes: Choose smudge- and waterproof eyeliner and mascara to avoid those dreaded dark rings around your eyes. You may need to experiment with different brands - some waterproof mascaras may not be smudge proof.

4 Too much jewellery: Costume and outsized jewellery can help you make a fashion statement, but don't be tempted to wear all the necklaces and bracelets you own in one go. Subtlety is good.
