The Blck Brd
6/F and roof garden, No 8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central. Tel: 2545 8555
The vibe: the Blck Brd is the latest addition to 'Wellinghurst' - at the intersection of Wellington Street and Lyndhurst Terrace - but with no DJs, no cocktails and no televisions, it has a unique focus: top-quality booze. And it's all served up in an elegant, almost industrial environment, with Eames bar stools and Chesterfield sofas scattered over roughly hewn tiling and softly illuminated by 1950s theatre lighting.
The drinks: mostly whisky. The staff recommend the 14-year-old Oban (HK$138 a shot), along with the Ardbeg, Talisker and Glenmorangie (all HK$88 a shot). Wine lovers are also well catered for with reasonably priced bottles such as the Geoff Merrill Pimpala Road Shiraz (HK$360) and the Domaine Thomas and Fils (HK$450).
The verdict: don't let the elegant design and selection of premium spirits fool you into thinking the Blck Brd is a stuffy old blokes' bar aimed at cashed-up bankers. Sure, you can smoke a stogie on the outdoor terrace while you sip some serious Scotch, but there's not a whiff of exclusivity - it's a taste of the high life for those not afraid to dress down.
