Warning of Mark Six scam

2-MIN READ2-MIN

Selling bogus winning Mark Six lottery tickets has become the latest street scam in Hong Kong, police have said.

The warning came as officers said the total number of street scams reported in the first 10 months of the year was 50 - the same as for the period last year.

Most of the cases involved tried-and-tested tricks, but police discovered a new trend this year of selling the forged winning tickets.

The trick involves swindlers - middle-aged women - asking people to collect Mark Six prize money on their behalf, claiming they cannot do so themselves because they are not Hong Kong residents.

The victims are asked to pay between HK$2,000 and HK$50,000 as a deposit for the forged winning tickets, money which is to be held until they return with the non-existent prize money, which the women promise to share with their victims.

Kowloon West Regional Crime Prevention Officer Sandra Chui Yui-luen said so far no one had been arrested in connection with the scam. 'It is a bit difficult to obtain information, as many victims are elderly and cannot remember well what the swindlers look like,' she said.
