A speeding drink-driver who hit and killed a teacher on his way to school on Christmas Eve last year was jailed yesterday for four years and banned from driving for five years for what a judge described as the most culpable offence of its kind.

Transport worker Chow Pui-yeung, 24, killed 44-year-old father-of-two Chu Chi-shing, a teacher at Ning Po No 2 College in Kwun Tong. Chow is serving a 12-month jail term for possession of a dangerous drug.

Saying nothing was better than an offender's genuine remorse to reform, Chu's wife called on drivers to treasure life and practise safe driving.

'I hope I am the last family falling victim to drink-driving,' Chu Lau Wai-yin, who is also a teacher, said.

Chow had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and drink-driving.

The court heard the crash happened after Chow went on an all-night drinking spree during which he shared five bottles of whisky with friends on December 24 last year.

He was almost three times over the legal blood-alcohol limit when he was driving his car at about 80km/h in a 50km/h zone in Lee On Road, Sau Mau Ping. He overtook a number of cars and ignored the request of a friend with him to slow down. He lost control after overtaking a car, mounted a footpath and hit Chu. Chu was pronounced dead at the scene. An injured jogger spent 10 days in hospital.
