Sometimes, it's not good enough to be simply smart: you have to be a little tough, too. That's the idea behind Motorola's new Defy handset - the company's latest smartphone that comes with a more impressive range of features than previous models. As a smartphone, the Defy runs on the Android 2.1 operating system on a 800MHz processor, and connects to the usual GSM and 3G networks, as well as high-speed data in the form of HSDPA at 7.2Mbps. That means you can connect to the internet and access all of the most popular applications, such as Facebook and Twitter, using Android. However, the Defy smartphone has other, er, smart features that make it stand out from the crowd. First of all, it is water- and dust-resistant, so you won't have to worry about using it in the rain. The display screen is also impact- and scratch-resistant, although the makers do not say if it is shockproof - so don't drop it. With smartphones becoming an increasing part of people's everyday life, it makes a great deal of sense to have one that you can use any time - and anywhere you want. In addition, the Defy offers some neat tricks, such as Motoblur - a technology that lets you compose words by connecting the letters of that word in a single stroke, as well as CrystalTalk, which features noise filtering for better sound. The Motorola Defy is listed at HK$3,280. Pros: water- and dust-proof, Motoblur for easy composition, CrystalTalk for better sound Cons: slower processor than some comparable models
