A paediatrician has denied that he drove dangerously when he changed lanes and hit a motorcycle, killing the pillion passenger.

Euan Soo Tsung-liang, 27, who works at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung, pleaded not guilty yesterday to dangerous driving causing the death of Lee Kwok-kan, 40, a security guard.

Public prosecutor Robert Lee Kan-yung told Eastern Court that Soo was travelling in an eastbound lane of the Island Eastern Corridor at 6.55pm on September 19 when he steered into the right lane and hit the motorcycle, throwing Lee and rider Chan Chun-fai to the road. Lee, who suffered serious head injuries, was certified dead in hospital at 7.15pm. Chan spent five days in hospital being treated for fractures and scratches.

Medical examinations found that neither Soo nor Chan had been drinking and vehicle checks showed both had been operating normally and their brakes were working.

Chan, 27, a lift mechanic, told the court it was the first time Lee had ridden pillion with him. They were travelling from North Point to Sai Wan Ho at about 70km/h, both wearing helmets.

Chan said he saw Soo's car swerve from the left into his lane near an exit from the corridor.
