Jan 22, 5pm, 10.30pm, Fringe Club In an age where many adults even struggle to negotiate the colour co-ordinated machinations of Guitar Hero, it's encouraging to know that real-life axe-playing heroes are keeping the shredding flames burning bright among the new generation. Enter 10-year-old Yuto Miyazawa (right), a bona-fide guitar prodigy who is breathing new life into classic rock and metal riffery. No stranger to Hong Kong, he packed out the Fringe Gallery last autumn, and is returning for two shows on January 22 as part of this year's City Festival. Fringe Club administrator Catherine Lau says: 'His shows in October sold out and the audience absolutely loved him. We showcase new bands and new musicians all year round, especially young and emerging artists, so Yuto is a very good fit for us.' Inspired by his father, Miyazawa began learning the guitar at the age of three and by the time he was eight, Guinness World Records had recognised him as the world's youngest professional guitar player. Rising to fame in his native Tokyo, it wasn't long before Miyazawa was charming television audiences in America, playing live on talk shows, and after a series of viral YouTube clips became an internet sensation with a global fan base. Viewers were captivated by the boy with the slight frame and wicked licks, dwarfed by what appears an almost comically oversized guitar. But the kid can play. Beyond novelty, Miyazawa has undoubted technical talent and clearly revels in the pure joy of playing his guitar. He has performed live to tens of thousands at large-scale events including Lollapalooza in Chicago, the Gathering of the Vibes festival in Connecticut and New York's Times Square. Accompanied by a drummer and bassist, Miyazawa will be presenting his adaptations of classic rock standards by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, along with his own repertoire of originals, in Hong Kong later this month.
