Operation Santa Claus is a great example of how a grass-roots effort to help the city's disadvantaged grew to become an important territory-wide event that involves big corporate donors, schools and the public.
Some schools even volunteer to organise fund-raising activities. Student ambassadors from the city's universities play an active role in the event.
But there are fake charities that do not really exist. They take advantage of the giving spirit of Hongkongers and cheat them out of money. The government should have laws against this kind of fraud. People who donate should be more careful. They should make sure that they know where their money will go.
Next time you walk past a flag seller, show your support. Give a helping hand to spread joy in the community.
