Wife hammered over odd jobs

A man attacked his wife with a hammer because she did odd jobs that he believed would affect their eligibility for social welfare, the District Court heard. Nguyen Van-guang, 57, pleaded guilty to wounding Li Jianci with intent. She spent six days in intensive care with a fractured skull and broken ribs. Sentencing was adjourned to February 14.

PolyU burglar gets three years

A repeat offender was jailed for three years for breaking into Polytechnic University seven times in a year to steal computers, mobile phones and a camera. Joe Chong Kin-shing, 33, who had 20 previous convictions, pleaded guilty in the District Court to the burglaries between December 2009 and November last year.

Dozens evacuate smoking bus

Dozens of passengers evacuated a KMB double-decker in Lion Rock Tunnel, Sha Tin, after smoke started billowing out of the engine. Four women were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation. The incident happened about 12 hours after the 10-year-old bus had passed its monthly inspection.
