Life's a Feast (lifesafeast. blogspot.com) is a food blog I 'discovered' only recently, although it's about three years old. I came across the site when researching my current baking obsession, macarons - the delicate and notoriously temperamental little pastries made famous at patisseries such as Laduree and Pierre Herme, in Paris, France.

Jamie is an American who sounds like she's led an exciting, peripatetic life and had a colourful and varied career. She's had jobs ranging from research assistant and art gallery man- ager to milliner and interpreter. Now living in Nantes, France, with her husband, the mother-of-two writes, 'I bake, I cook, I eat, I read, I watch movies.'

Naturally, it's the first three activities that attracted her followers, although details about a life that's so different from our own are also fascinating. And, of course, she muses on those facts of life that are universal - no matter where we live - such as horrible weather, agonising over what gifts to buy loved ones and getting old.

Interspersed among her rambling musings about life are recipes for blueberry hibiscus panna cotta; olive, parmesan and speck breadsticks with pumpkin soup (below); Portuguese cream tartlets; and, of course, many variations on the macarons that first led me to the blog.
