THE British Medical Association (BMA) is investigating the election of its Hong Kong branch.

But the new president of the Hong Kong British Medical Association (HKBMA), Dr Michael Li Ka-wah, said the result of the March 29 poll should stand.

''As far as I am concerned this election was held democratically and according to the constitution. But if we are instructed by the BMA to hold another election I will have no qualms about doing so,'' he said.

The investigation was sparked by a letter of complaint from the treasurer of the previous branch council, Professor David Anderson.

It said that just before the poll, more than 50 members had been recruited with membership fees paid for by personal cheques from the dean of medicine at the Chinese University, Professor Arthur Li Kwok-cheung.

Professor Li said other members also had canvassed for votes.

Professor Anderson claimed also that some candidates had been disqualified from standing because they had been nominated by a lapsed member, Dr Sung Wing-choon, but Dr Jake O'Donovan's nomination had been accepted even though he was not marked up as a member at the time.
