EMPHASIS on English does not guarantee a better academic performance by students, according to Lee Kau Yan Memorial School principal Lee Pun-cho.
''In fact, teaching students in their mother tongue can be more effective,'' said Mr Lee.
Many parents fear that the lack of English education may create problems for their children when they go abroad to further their studies or look for jobs.
But Mr Lee thinks otherwise. ''Students can understand better in Chinese, and this may help boost their performance in studies.
''I hope all parents will keep an open mind about this. What we should strive for is a high standard of education in both Chinese and English languages.'' Mr Lee also stressed that extra-curricular activities and academics complemented each other.
Does too much play hinders the students' progress in study? According to Mr Lee, the opposite is true.
