Bulletproof Kitten Mafia

Volar, tomorrow, 11pm

Following the end of his successful monthly club night, Hype Nasty, in January, local DJ Kid Fresh is back with Bulletproof Kitten Mafia (BKM) - a new monthly all-women DJ night at Central club Volar.

Tomorrow's launch event will feature MayaVanya as the headline act. The Croatian-born, New Zealand-based sister duo were voted 2010's 'next-generation DJs' in one of the world's biggest online talent searches, backed by some key names in the electronic music industry.

Kornel Koch of Beatport said MayaVanya's ability to 'bring together everything from tropical music to fidget house reflects an exciting development in club culture, where urban and Latin music are fusing more and more with electronic dance music'.

The pair (above) will be supported by Miss Yellow and Wendy Wenn, two of the most in-demand female DJs in Hong Kong. BKM is showcasing the skills of women DJs, Kid Fresh says, to combat the 'topless, brainless and talentless Chrissie Chau-esque bulls**t that contaminates Hong Kong nightlife these days' - a reference to news that local 'pseudo-model' Chrissie Chau Sau-na has turned her hand to mixing music.

BKM also highlights the near-absence of women in the upper ranks of electronic music. DJ Mag's annual top 100 list featured only one woman in 2010 (at No 93), while the top 20 from online magazine Resident Advisor included a slightly more respectable two.

Are female DJs as a whole underrated, less talented, or are there simply fewer of them? If Bulletproof Kitten Mafia lives up to its promise, you'll have an idea by Saturday morning.
