YOU are what you wear. And the Consul-General for Finland, Hannu Uusi-Videnoja, settled for a politically correct fashion touch when he attended the cocktail party held at the Aberdeen Marina Club to mark the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa.

He was proudly showing off his African National Congress (ANC) cuff-links to all and sundry, obtained from the days when he was posted in Durban.

Obviously having first discreetly checked the cuff of South African Consul-General Michael Farr when he raised his glass, Uusi-Videnoja observed that he must be the only one sporting this sartorial link to the new regime.

Many of the guests were trying to figure out if there were any similarities between the ANC fashion accoutrement and the new South African flag, which was displayed at the far end of the room.

Incidentally, Farr's wife Lettie complained that she had to drag her husband away from the television where the inauguration ceremony was shown live from Pretoria in order to get him to the Aberdeen Marina on time.

''Besides,'' said Lettie, ''the occasion was so moving, had I watched any more of it my make-up would have been ruined.''
