Drum'n'bass music has enjoyed a spirited following in Hong Kong since its worldwide explosion in the 1990s, and Saturday night's event at Hyde should pack out the two-storey venue.

LTJ Bukem, known to friends as Danny Williamson (right) and to fans as the 'godfather' of British jungle, will play alongside verbal gymnast MC Conrad as they pass through the city on a world tour. The London-born DJ promises it will be 'a night of energy, fun, progression, good vibes and, of course, lots of smiles'.

Bukem is often hailed as a leader of Britain's drum'n'bass movement, alongside producers such as Goldie and Roni Size. The genre began as a discordant child of techno and evolved over the decade into the breakbeat, funk-influenced dance music we recognise as jungle. 'So much has changed since the emergence of the sound in the late 80s and early 90s,' says Bukem. 'The way we make music, the speed of the music, the way we DJ, but ultimately the heart and soul are still unchanged and it's this heart and soul that will continue to drive the music forward.'

Bukem was adopted and raised by strict Baptist parents in the British town of Watford. After leaving school at 16, he became devoted to acid house music and soon found himself behind the decks at some of Britain's biggest raves.

He made his debut in 1990 with Logical Progression, an expansive, melodic track that marked a softening of drum'n'bass from its darker, hardcore origins. It was one of the most influential records of the time, and formed a blueprint that would help the genre move into the mainstream.
