Ricoh was one of the first camera makers to make wide-angle lenses a standard feature for point-and-shoot models. Now the company wants to expand that capability with a huge zoom lens like those typically reserved for much bigger cameras. The new Ricoh CX5 gives you a 10.7x optical zoom, or 28mm-300mm in standard camera terms. On top of that, Ricoh has also introduced a technology called Super-resolution zoom, which further boosts the zooming capabilities of the CX5 to a whopping 600mm without degrading image quality. When used with its digital zoom feature, it can get you really close to a subject through an amazing 2,880mm zoom. You can also get very close to an object in a literal sense - with the CX5's macro shooting mode, which lets you take photos from a distance of one centimetre. The compromise for the CX5 is the lens aperture. Unlike some of the latest popular models, such as the Canon S95 and Panasonic's LX-5, which boast a large aperture of f/2.0, the maximum aperture for the CX5 is f/3.5, which means it won't work as well in low-light conditions or indoors. The CX5 uses a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with a maximum image resolution of 10 megapixels, has a 3-inch LCD display and can record video at 1280x720 pixels at 30 frames per second. Its price is HK$2,780. Pros: outstanding zoom ability Cons: aperture limited to f/3.5
