Nintendo 3DS

Smartphones

Nintendo has brought the third dimension to its dual-screen portable gamer. Aptly named the Nintendo 3DS, the device allows you to play 3D games, as well as traditional Nintendo DS games. But unlike with other 3D formats, you don't need special glasses to see the extra dimension.

The 3D-enabled top screen gives you a full resolution of 800 pixels, but it is engineered to block half of the pixels from each eye, thus creating the same effect as 3D glasses.

The 3D technology uses more power, limiting battery life to three to five hours, compared with five to eight for regular games.

Nintendo has also added twin cameras on the back of the display which allow you to take 3D photos. A camera on the inside lets you take photos of yourself.

You also get a new circular control pad on top of the four directional controls, a motion sensor, a microphone and Wi-fi to connect to the internet or other 3DS units. About 20 3D games are available for the device so far.

The Nintendo 3DS has not been launched in Hong Kong but is available from sites such as Amazon for about HK$3,200.

Pros: 3D gaming without funny glasses, built-in 3D camera, Wi-fi internet access

Cons: screen resolution is severely limited compared to most smartphones
