IT took seven years for the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens to move from its birthplace, Hong Kong Football Club, to the Hong Kong Stadium.
Thankfully, the territory's cricket chiefs did not wait as long. After just two years at the Kowloon Cricket Club, the Hong Kong Sixes makes a move to So Kon Po where on October 1-2 the popular tournament will be played.
The move is a brave decision by the organisers who must be lauded for their enterprise.
Wembley have assured the Hong Kong Sixes organisers that they will guarantee a ground fit for a Test match.
The far-thinking move, meanwhile, was put into perspective by John Hung, president of the Hong Kong Cricket Association, who said the tournament must be used as a vehicle to increase the awareness of cricket in the local Chinese community.
Hung has correctly focused on the high profile of the Sixes and he knows that a top-class event featuring the game's top cricketers can benefit the game.
While many people will gladly jump on the bandwagon of the Sixes, how many are seriously concerned with promoting the game in Hong Kong? At Thursday's press conference to announce the move to the Stadium, it was ironic to see Howard Wells, head honcho at the Sports Development Board.
