Hong Kong credited with providing the inspiration to give back to global community

Meera T. Gandhi has long been involved in humanitarian efforts in her native Mumbai and around the globe. But she credits Hong Kong, where her family moved three years ago, with the inspiration to give her work concrete form. During the charity screening of her 19-minute film, Giving Back, at the Grand Cinema in Elements mall on Wednesday, Gandhi thanked those who helped her establish the Giving Back Foundation last year.

'It was really Hong Kong that said to me that I should take my work farther and start my own foundation, with the focus of helping women and children with educational opportunities,' she said.

The film charts the mother-of three's own experience in giving back, from her first impressions of the work done at Mother Teresa's Asha Daan (children's home) in her hometown, to the efforts of well-known philanthropists and social activists she has come to know, including Kerry Kennedy, singer Bono, Cherie Blair and Raj Loomba.

Local businessman and songwriter David Harilela, who provided the end-credit song for the film, introduced Gandhi's vision; while Marcel Pordes, executive director of The Beauty Group, (pictured here with Ghandi) represented sponsors Caran d'Ache and Perrelet.

'When I heard Meera needed help with the event, there was no question that we would pitch in,' Pordes said.

The evening's donations and ticket proceeds will help to build a playground for the children of Saint Michael's Hostel in New Delhi.
