STUDENTS learned a lot about water pollution and the importance of protecting the oceans after taking part in a marine environmental project.
''I was so depressed after some field trips to coastal areas. Ocean pollution has reached an alarming level,'' said Grace Wong Wing-yi, one of the first prize winners of the Healthy Oceans Campaign.
The campaign, jointly organised by Hong Kong Hilton and the World Wide Fund for Nature, was aimed at raising student awareness of Hong Kong's marine environment.
Targeted at the 15 to 16 age group, the campaign was introduced last September and attracted 11 schools.
Each participating school undertook a beach clean-up and an outing during which a study of marine life was undertaken.
Professor Brian Morton, director of the Swire Marine Laboratory in Hong Kong, provided the participants with background information for their projects.
At the prize presentation ceremony held recently, Wing-yi told Young Post that the campaign helped her realise the importance of oceans.
