Kam Tsin Village Ho Tung School in Sheung Shui has set up a green education centre, Low Carbon Home, to promote a lower carbon footprint in our daily lives.
The joint non-profit project of the primary school and the Conservancy Association is sponsored by the Environmental Protection Department.
The 400-square-foot home is a copy of a Hong Kong flat, complete with furniture. Its information panels display practical green tips and plenty of concrete examples of how to live a low-carbon lifestyle.
The home features a self-sufficient system for renewable energy. It includes a solar tube, a mini wind turbine and eight solar panels to power its energy-efficient LED lamps and spotlights.
The model kitchen uses an energy-saving fridge, replaces chemical detergents with natural camellia seed powder and replaces laundry powder with laundry balls. Local designers helped create a green living room. All the chairs and tables are made from recycled materials like promotional banners and water bottles.
There are also interactive games that show you how to make environmentally friendly food choices.
You can use a scale to see how much carbon is emitted in bringing different types of food to your table - for example, 35kg carbon for every kilogram of beef.
