FOLLOWING the establishment of a green committee last year to promote environmental efficiency at the hotel, Island Shangri-La has joined a tree-planting project organised by Friends of the Earth. The project aims to save further soil erosion on Lantau Island. It also includes beach cleaning and environment lectures. At the hotel, the green committee identifies ways to reduce wastage within the hotel, stop practices which might damage the environment and promote environmental awareness. Recycling of used envelopes and paper is now part of the day-to-day operation of the hotel. Recycled paper is used for a long list of printing items from stationery to staff magazines, and from welcome messages to checkout envelopes. Wherever possible, chemicals which are potentially harmful to the environment are being phased out and environment-friendly suppliers are sought. Staff are encouraged to think green, to reassess working procedures and make changes that benefit the environment. From switching off appliances when they are not necessary, to photocopying memos on both sides. Polythene bags have been eliminated from the hotel's laundry operation. Re-usable cloth laundry bags are available in the rooms and laundry is returned in rattan baskets. The hotel also has an environmental vision statement and builds environmental awareness into all job descriptions.
