Pianist launches Chinese musicians concert series

THE distinguished Chinese pianist Wu Yi will give a recital on Friday at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre at 8 pm.

Wu Yi is the recent winner of the first Taipei International Piano Competition.

He is also first prize winner at several prestigious national and international competitions, including the Franz Liszt Piano Competition in 1986, the Competition Agrencard in 1988, and the Aspen Music Festival Competition in 1990.

Born to an artistic family, Wu Yi showed an outstanding gift for music as a young boy. He began music studies with his mother at four, and at 10 entered the Conservatory of Shanghai, studying under Professor Zhang Yu-chin.

In 1985, he moved to Buenos Aires to study with Professor Aldo Antognozzi, and in 1987, he was appointed piano professor with special honours by the Beethoven Conservatory of Buenos Aires.

Wu made his concert debut at the world famous Theatre Colon, and at 21 emigrated to the US from Argentina as one of the world's most promising young artists.
