A WAITER who admitted helping manage a brothel where girls worked as prostitutes was fined and given a suspended sentence in the District Court yesterday.

  Wong Yuen-yee, 33, also pleaded guilty to three counts of permitting girls aged under 16 to work as prostitutes in the premises.

  The three girls, then aged between 13 and 15, provided sexual services at a Tsim Sha Tsui brothel managed by co-defendant Kam Kam-ping, 31.

  Kam admitted three similar charges as well as a count of managing premises used as a vice establishment.

  Wong and Kam both pleaded guilty to three joint counts of living off the earnings of prostitution.

  Deputy Judge Thomas imposed a fine of $38,000 on Wong and sentenced him to 18 months' imprisonment, suspended for two years.

  Defence counsel Fred Sham said Wong accepted a friend's offer to work as a cleaner at the Tsim Sha Tsui flat after he was laid off by his long-time employer.

  Mr Sham submitted that Wong, who had a clean record, played a very minor role in the illicit enterprise.

  It was only after Wong took up the job that he found out the nature of the business, counsel said.

  Wong's wife, who stood by her husband, is due to give birth in August.

  Yesterday, Kam admitted 10 other charges including seven counts of living off the earnings of prostitution.

  Sentencing for Kam was adjourned until today.



Brothel hand fined $38,000
