HACTL freight volume leaps 16pc

HONG KONG Air Cargo Terminals (HACTL) air freight throughput accelerated again at Kai Tak in April, after two relatively quiet months.

Total throughput rose 16.7 per cent year-on-year to 100,266 tonnes during the month, after single-digit growth in February and March.

Export cargo throughput climbed 15.2 per cent year-on-year to 45,144 tonnes while import cargo was up 17 per cent to 44,573 tonnes.

Transshipment goods accounted for 10,548 tonnes and continued to show the highest sectoral increase, 21.5 per cent up on April last year.

In the first four months of this year, HACTL handled 353,342 tonnes of air cargo, 15.3 per cent ahead of last year's 306,490 tonnes.

Hong Kong's efficiency as an air cargo hub also continues to dwarf other airports.

Last month, HACTL mishandled only 11 out of 183,534 inbound and outbound consignments, while 2,364 consignments arrived mishandled on flights from 14 other key airports.

HACTL said this represented a mishandling rate of just one consignment in 16,685, compared with one in 101 from Manila, one in 25 from Singapore and one in seven from Chicago.
