TWO construction workers were yesterday found guilty by a High Court jury of the manslaughter of a man who accidentally stepped on the toes of one of them. Mr Justice Leong postponed the sentencing of Kok Lon-ven, 25, and Wu Ming-tak, 32, until June 7, pending background reports. The two men had denied the unlawful killing of 30-year-old Gan Wai-kay. During the trial, prosecutor Alan Lucas said Kok and Wu were queuing behind Gan to buy lunch at the Cafe de Coral in Mei Foo Sun Chuen on March 9 last year. While they were waiting in line, Gan stepped back and accidentally stepped on the foot of one of them. A quarrel ensued and the three men ended up in a fight during which Gan had been kicked and punched, but managed to stay on his feet. Soon after the fight, Gan collapsed. He was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital but suffered a cardiac arrest and was certified dead at 2.50 pm.
