AN immature 17-year-old girl due to give birth next week will have her baby in jail after the Correctional Services Department (CSD) said she was unsuitable for a training centre, where teenagers are usually sent.

Deputy Judge Burrell had wanted to send Ng Ka-yee to a training centre after she pleaded guilty to trafficking in 150 grams of heroin, and had called for a second report.

However, the High Court heard yesterday that she was still regarded as unsuitable for a training centre as she had experimented with drugs and would be a bad influence on other girls.

Her lawyer, John Marray, said he was disappointed the new report seemed to be a carbon copy of the previous one, the only difference being that she had been found physically fit for a training centre this time.

He said Ng was a young girl reeling from one disaster to another, crying out for some sort of training to give direction to her life. She would not get that in prison.

However, the judge acknowledged he had not interviewed Ng, whereas the centre had given a comprehensive report, which he accepted. He said that in jail Ng would have maximum care for the birth.
