ABOUT 150 Form Seven students taking ''engineering science'' at prevocational schools now stand an equal chance as their grammar school counterparts to enter the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the City Polytechnic (CPHK).

HKUST and CPHK have announced that they consider engineering science as equivalent to the physics taught at secondary schools, said Ronald Lau Yiu-fai, Hong Kong Prevocational Schools Council chairman.

Engineering Science is an Advanced-level subject offered only in prevocational schools.

''City Polytechnic has even agreed to accept applications from students following engineering science for the departments of electronic engineering and mathematics,'' Mr Lau said during the council's annual report conference.

The recognition will benefit Form Seven students from 19 prevocational schools in the territory.

The council has also called for improved teaching technology to meet the needs of today.

''The Education Department has initially accepted our request to set up a computer laboratory in each prevocational school, but the plan has yet to be finalised,'' the chairman said.
